The segment profiles four women who had various skin rejuvenation treatments, including Thermage for body and facial skin tightening and Fraxel laser treatment for skin tone improvement. New York City dermatologist Dr. Anne Chapas also discussed the benefits of Thermage and Fraxel Restore treatments, as well as Isolaz acne treatment, with Today Show host Meredith Vieira.

Fraxel Restore was used to improve the skin tone of two women suffering from uneven pigmentation. Jill, 43, has fair skin and experienced considerable sun exposure without adequate sun protection as a child. She had Fraxel laser treatment to repair the sun damage on her face and was pleased with the results and new skin cell growth stimulated by the Fraxel laser.

“It really got rid of so much of the sun damage that I could see. It just makes me feel like I have fresh, new skin,” Jill said.

Dr. Chapas informed viewers about Fraxel Restore recovery, indicating that a few days of redness and dryness may occur after treatment. She also indicated that for best results, Fraxel Restore may need to be performed in a series of one to three treatments, depending on the needs of your skin.

Lisa, 46, also sought treatment with the Fraxel laser to improve skin discoloration she developed as a result of health issues and breakouts. In addition to undergoing treatment with the Fraxel Restore, Lisa also had Thermage skin tightening performed on her face to correct mild skin laxity.

The story’s final story highlighted another woman named Lisa, 37, who had Thermage treatment performed on her abdomen to tighten sagging skin lingering after two pregnancies. Dr. Chapas explained that Thermage skin tightening works by stimulating collagen production and indicated that Thermage results typically last one to two years.

Fraxel Restore skin rejuvenation and Thermage skin tightening procedures are available at the offices of Eugene plastic surgeon Dr. Lee Daniel.

What the company is calling “proprietary Comfort Pulse Technology” allows therapeutic heat to be delivered more effectively across the treated area, which is said to provide a “more efficient skin tightening treatment.”  The new system also includes a special vibrating hand piece for added comfort.

Professionals like Robert Weiss, MD, with the Maryland Laser, Skin and Vein Institute say the improvements brought by the CPT system allow more energy delivery with greater comfort; in turn, physicians can “provide a more efficacious treatment and increase overall patient satisfaction.”

Solta Medical spokespersons say the technology is “a leap forward.”  CEO Stephen J. Fanning says, “[CPT] is not just an incremental improvement – it is a step change in non-surgical anti-aging technology, allowing physicians to achieve better patient outcomes in less time and with more comfort than ever before.”

Surgeons Promote Healthy Lifestyles

Monday, June 29th, 2009 by editor

Plastic surgeons know healthy patients have more successful surgery outcomes.  That’s why they often decline to operate on a patient who is obese or one who engages in risky habits like smoking.  Such patients face greater risks and complications like delayed healing, scars, and other issues.

Those interested in cosmetic and facial plastic surgery should first go through a sort of ‘lifestyle makeover,’ modifying their habits until they have reached a satisfactory state of health. At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we want our patients to have the best surgical experience possible, so we ask them to focus on being healthy first. The ideal patient refrains from smoking or using illegal drugs, maintains a stable weight, and has realistic expectations about cosmetic surgery.

Fraxel and Thermage Plan to Open Hi-Tech R&D Facility

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 by editor

The new parent company of Fraxel and Thermage Inc – Solta Medical Inc., recently announced plans to open an Aesthetic Center in California that will function as an R&D hub and a physician training facility.

The activities within the center will focus on all of the innovative AED technologies that have been brought together under the Solta Medical name.

The center is said to incorporate a biomedical engineering lab and an in-house clinic, both of which will allow physicians to take part in ongoing research.  Dermatologist Vic Narurkar says (in the press release) the center “will allow the company’s optics and biomedical engineers to share data and receive immediate clinical feedback about their work in new product development and existing product enhancement.”

A grand opening of the new facility will coincide with the 67th annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology in San Francisco, which will bring together many industry professionals for in-depth discussions and presentations on topics like laser resurfacing and skin tightening.

All of these new developments and collaborations in the field create an environment in which it is not unreasonable to expect some exciting new technological advancements in the cosmetic surgery and dermatology industry.

We have both Fraxel Restore and Thermage here in Eugene, and we’ll keep you posted with all of the latest developments.

Thermage Inc. Renamed Solta Medical – New Website and Branding Unveiled

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 by editor

Thermage Inc., the popular skin tightening device manufacturer, has “turned a new page” in medical aesthetics ‘Solta Medical’ is their new corporate name and a new branding style has been created for the Thermage product.

The changes follow the company’s purchase of California based fractional laser manufacturer, Reliant Technologies; a deal that was initiated last year for approximately $87.5 million.  Reliant Tech was known for producing the successful fraxel brand of laser skin resurfacing systems, a brand which is now under the umbrella of Solta Medical.

Both brands (Thermage and fraxel) recently launched new, more user-friendly websites that present a clear departure from their previously seen, ultra-clinical designs.

A new stock ticker symbol will be recognized as “SLTM” on the Nasdaq.

In a recent press release, President Stephen J. Fanning commented, “the name and ticker symbol changes are a great start to the New Year and a key milestone in the integration of the acquisition of Reliant Technologies Inc.”

Thermage and Reliant Technologies (Fraxel) Finalize Merger

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 by editor

Thermage has announced its acquisition of the Mountain View, California based company, Reliant Technologies.  The deal is valued at a total of $66.2 million in stock and cash.

Reliant has become a popular fixture in the aesthetic surgery market due to the success of Fraxel, its brand of skin-resurfacing laser technology, which we offer at The Spa Side in our office in Eugene.

Thermage Inc purchased the company for approximately 23 million in stock shares, $25 million cash and must assume $7 million of Reliant’s debt.  Shares of Reliant stock have dropped since plans for the deal were made public in July.

Reliant Technologies has been a highly profitable company, largely due to the effectiveness of Fraxel laser technology.  Fraxel treatments stimulate collagen growth and resurface skin by penetrating the outer dermis with ‘fractional’ microscopic laser columns.  The body’s natural healing process then promotes skin rejuvenation and collagen building.

Thermage is known for marketing a unique, non-invasive cosmetic skin treatment that utilizes radiofrequency technology to heat and thus, tighten skin.  The treatment is also said to improve skin texture and tone.

A recent episode of the daytime talk show The Doctors, featured an in-studio Thermage procedure done by Dr. Bill Johnson of Dallas based Innovations Medspa. Thermage is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that utilizes radio frequency technology to heat collagen fibers under the skin. Upon being heated, the collagen fibers contract and tighten the skin.

Cosmetic surgeon Andrew Ordon is a regular participant on the program; part of their self proclaimed “medical dream team.” He and Dr. Johnson document the procedure and provide results. Sonia, their guest and patient, loses over 2 inches of her waistline and 5 inches from her hip in just an hour.
