Attractive ears add to the overall aesthetics of the face, making them a popular target for cosmetic adjustments. Though hardly discussed, ear surgery is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. Surgery on the ears typically involves the readjustment, reshaping or resizing of the ears.

Ear pinning surgery is sought out by children and adults alike to correct the appearance of overly protruding ears which may appear out of proportion with the rest of the face. Through the use of permanent sutures, the ears can be permanently readjusted closer to the face.

Earlobe repair surgery is often sought out by women who have worn heavy earrings for years. Over time, the earlobes become stretched, strained and more vulnerable to injury. Instances of trauma, where an earring is suddenly pulled from the ears, often from a hair brush or child, can also give the appearance of torn or stretched lobes.

Earlobe repair is a fairly straightforward procedure for plastic surgeons. Performed under local anesthesia and requiring almost no downtime, most patients are able to re-pierce their ears within a couple of months.

Earlobe reduction is used for those men and women who are dissatisfied with the overall size of their earlobes. As we age, the ears continue to grow, which can cause earlobe stretching or enlargement. Earlobe reduction is frequently sought out as a facial rejuvenation procedure and works by removing wedge of tissue from the lobe.

Ear surgery is not typically covered by health insurance. If you’re interested in ear surgery, anticipate the overall cost to range from $400 and $1,200.

In many cases, earlobe damage or deformity can be prevented. Consider the tips below:

• Avoid wearing heavy dangling earrings on a daily basis. Save them for special occasions.
• Do not wear dangling or hoop earring while holding or playing with a young child.
• Remove your earrings every night before bed. Always be extra careful when removing clothing.
• Always take your earrings out before combing your hair.

The plastic surgery industry continues to see growth. Botox injections, tummy tucks and breast implants have become a pervasive societal norm. But when it comes to plastic surgery etiquette, a gray area still exists – how should you react when someone noticeably changes his or her appearance?

Mary M. Mitchell, who has written several books on etiquette, recently wrote a Reuters story about what she views as proper etiquette regarding plastic surgery. If you know someone who is considering or has recently undergone plastic surgery, an appropriate reaction will make the situation more comfortable for everyone. Here are some suggestions from Mitchell:

1) Remain Neutral

If a coworker, friend or family member confesses to you that he or she is considering plastic surgery, resist trying to talk the person out of it. Plastic surgery is a very personal decision. It’s right for some and wrong for others. Either way, it’s important that you remain neutral and respect his or her final choice.

2) Don’t Say a Word

Though you may be tempted to ask, it’s simply bad manners to bring up a person’s recent cosmetic procedure. Unless he or she brings it up first, you have no business talking about it. If you feel compelled to comment, offering up a vague compliment like: “You look so great lately,” may open up the conversation door about the topic.

3) Avoid Judgment

If someone tells you about a recent plastic surgery procedure, remain diplomatic. Ask the person how he or she feels about the final results, but don’t offer up an opinion on them. The best way to respond to someone’s omission of dissatisfaction with a physical flaw is to say something like: “I see what you mean, but only after you pointed it out.”

Because realistic expectations are key to patient satisfaction, it is essential that you are … Continue reading →

Many women find that choosing their breast implant size can prove to be just as difficult as deciding to undergo breast augmentation in the first place. Because realistic expectations are key to patient satisfaction, it is essential that you are comfortable with the size of your implants prior to surgery.

Unfortunately there is no magic formula for determining which implant size is right for you, but considerations such as anatomy, cosmetic goals and lifestyle choices should all play a roll in your final decision. If you’re debating between one or more sizes, creating your own breast implant rice sizers is a great way to give you a more accurate idea of how your breasts will look and feel at varying implant sizes.

To make your own breast implant rice sizers at home, you will need the following materials:

Pantyhose or tights

Measuring cups

Dry rice

Scissors

Once you have your materials, begin by cutting each pantyhose leg off about halfway up from the bottom. Then stretch out each hose to make sure there is enough room for the rice. Using a measuring cup, you will then measure out your rice, making sure that you are filling the measuring cup completely. Sizes are as follows:

1 cup of rice = 250cc

1/2 cup of rice = 125cc

1/4 cup of rice = 75cc

Once you have filled each panty hose with the appropriate amount of rice, compress the rice at the bottom of the hose to round out the overall shape. Secure the rice by tying a knot directly above the rice filling. Cut off the remaining tail and you’re finished.

Wearing your new breast implant sizers underneath a sports will give you a realistic idea of how breast implants will look and feel under various clothing options. View the video below for a visual demonstration of creating your own breast implant sizers at home.

While many patients choose these “natural” treatments for their long term health benefits, they fail to recognize that these supplements can still pose health hazards. Like prescription medication, herbal supplements can have drug-like effects on the body. This also means they can cause negative side-effects, especially for patients undergoing surgical procedures.

Unfortunately for plastic surgeons, many patients fail to mention all of their herbal or homeopathic remedies prior to surgery, placing them at a higher risk for complication.

“Many patients don’t disclose their intake of herbs or supplements, and they are often not aware of the risk of complications, which can seriously compromise surgical outcomes and patient safety,” said Dr. Foad Nahai, MD, editor-in-chief of Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

A new book entitled “Bleeding Risks of Herbal, Homeopathic, and Dietary Supplements: A Hidden Nightmare for Plastic Surgeons?” released by researchers at Loma Linda University aims to address this very issue for plastic surgeons and patients.

Even herbs that are considered generally safe can have dangerous side effects under the wrong conditions. For instance, some herbs are capable of interacting with anesthesia or other medications commonly used during surgery, negatively affecting the operation or causing surgical complications.

Before undergoing a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, it is essential to provide your plastic surgeon with full disclosure when it comes to your daily health routine. Some potentially dangerous herbs and supplements prior to surgery may include Chinese peony, ginko, ginger, garlic, ginseng, wintergreen and Saw palmetto.

If you are taking a supplement which may increase dangerous bleeding effects, your plastic surgeon may ask that you wash off for at least three weeks prior to surgery. Certain minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox injections may also be affected by herbal supplements or over-the-counter medications.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Prior to your consultation, make a list of all the prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as any herbal supplements you have taken in the past month. This will ensure safer conditions for your cosmetic plastic surgery procedure.

Americans aren’t alone when it comes to their obsession with perfection and there’s now a study to prove it. According to the new study released by Costhetics, an informational website dedicated to educating consumers about cosmetic surgery in Australia, Australians spend a surprising 40% more annually than Americans on cosmetic surgery procedures.

The study, which focused on both non-invasive and surgical cosmetic procedures, found that on average, American’s spend USD$33,000 per one-thousand people, while Australians spend nearly AUD$45,000. The gap widens even more when exchange rates are taken into account. The Australian dollar is currently worth about 5% more than the U.S. dollar, creating a nearly 45% difference in capital.

This significant difference in spending habits has provoked some speculation as why more Australians are electing plastic surgery. Australians are experiencing similar economic hardships as the U.S., ruling out a black-and-white financial explanation.

Co-founder of Costhetics, Louisa McKay speculates that the Australian climate may be a reason behind increased spending on cosmetic procedures.

“Another possibility is the harsh sunlight Australians contend with, which has a significant affect on the aging process, increasing the appearance of wrinkles and sun damaged skin. “

Whatever the reason may be, the plastic surgery industry is soaring in Australia. The most popular procedures for women included breast surgery, liposuction, tummy tucks and eyelid surgery. As for the men, breast reduction, liposuction, cosmetic ear surgery and eyelid surgery were the top procedures.

With the increase in plastic surgery globally, experts are concerned that consumers may not be doing proper research prior to undergoing surgery. If you’re considering plastic surgery, make sure you know what you’re getting into and always seek out a board certified plastic surgeon.

Nationwide demand for cosmetic enhancements continues to rise according to the most recent statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Body makeover procedures like tummy tucks, breast augmentation and liposuction are at the forefront of high demand plastic surgery, giving momentum to the theory “mommy makeovers” are playing a significant role in the increase.

The term mommy makeover is used to describe a combination of body contouring procedures often elected by women following childbirth. According to Houston plastic surgeon James F. Boyton, MD, who specializes in mommy makeover surgeries, multiple procedures are often performed during the same surgery, making it more time efficient for busy moms.

“In general, patients want one recovery and one healing period away from their kids and this why I think the mommy makeover is so powerful: the procedure strives to improve all of the areas at the same time in one safe surgery with one recovery.”

With popular televisions shows like Desperate Housewives, portraying mothers who seemingly do it all while still maintaining a perfect figure, it’s no surprise that more women are thinking about body contouring procedures. In the past decade, the number of breast augmentations has increased by 39%, breast lifts by 70% and tummy tucks by 85%.

The increased demand for liposuction, breast augmentation and other mommy makeover procedures is great for the plastic surgery industry, but, Boyton cautions patients to be smart when choosing a cosmetic surgeon.

“There are lots of doctors that may claim to do aesthetic plastic surgery. Dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, and even dentists, ENT’s and general surgeons all perform this type of work much to the chagrin of board certified plastic surgeons. The only one that has been formally trained to do this work well, and do safely is the board certified plastic surgeon.”

The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto, Canada and NorthShore University Health System in Evanston, Illinois, enlisted the help of first-year medical student volunteers to independently rate the ages of facelift recipients. Volunteers were shown the photos of 60 patients before and after surgery.

The end results showed that volunteers estimated these patients to be 7.2 years younger, on average, than their actual age post-surgery. Researchers also pointed out that the patients who received the most plastic surgery procedures, including face, neck and forehead lifts, also received the lowest age estimates of the patients evaluated by volunteers.

While it may be no surprise that facelift surgery results in a significantly more youthful appearance, researchers believe that this surgery will help to guide both plastic surgeons and potential patients when formulating realistic expectations of facelift surgery outcomes.

“The goal of aesthetic facial surgery is to improve one’s appearance and to ‘turn back the clock,” according to study authors. “Our data demonstrate a significant and consistent reduction in perceived age after aesthetic facial surgery.”

If you’re considering facelift surgery, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits with a board certified facial plastic surgeon. The best candidate for facelift surgery is an individual who has noticeably sagging skin of the face and neck regions, but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure is well-defined.

Over the past five years, the revenue generated from laser tattoo removal procedures has risen more than 20%, based on market analysis. Laser tattoo removal procedures now generate more than $65 million annually—a number that analysts say will grow over the coming years.

But why are so many people turning to laser tattoo removal procedures, especially when the popularity of tattoos continues to rise?

Analysts posit that several factors have caused the increase in the number of patients seeking laser tattoo removal procedures, ranging from unemployment to the availability of tattoo removal technology.

Though unemployment continues to rise in the US, those with tattoos who find themselves unemployed may seek laser tattoo removal procedures as a way to make themselves more hirable.

The prevalence of tattoo removal technology may have also contributed to the rise in laser tattoo removal procedures in recent years. Since patients know they will have the option of removing the tattoo later in life, they may be more likely to get one, even if they don’t feel it be for life.

Two new treatments for skin cancer may help patients with skin cancer avoid going under the knife for treatment.

These new treatments for skin cancer both target basal cell carcinoma, which is the most common type of skin cancer. This type of cancer is brought on by exposure to UV rays, either from the sun or tanning beds. It can account for about 80% of all skin cancer cases.

The first of the new treatments for skin cancer is an oral medication that has already gained FDA approval and should be available in specialty pharmacies soon.

Erivedge, when taken once daily, can prevent a basal cell carcinoma from continuing to grow, according to WebMD.

In a study of nearly one hundred patients, Erivedge was shown to shrink 30% of metastatic tumors, and to shrink or eliminate 43% of locally advanced cancers.

The second of the new treatments for skin cancer is a topical application that researchers say may be best for skin cancer tumors on the face, according to The Telegraph.

Most patients who have tumors develop on their faces seek out alternatives to surgery, which can lave scarring or other disfiguring appearances. This new cream, when applied to the surface of the skin, irradiates the skin and causes the tumor to shrink. Success has been seen in a majority of cases—up to 95%.

If made available, this topical treatment would add another option for patients seeking treatment for basal cell carcinomas.

The best way to avoid skin cancer, however, is to limit sun exposure. You should also email Eugene plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel and ask about skin care products to protect your skin.

Plastic surgeons understand that the needs of each patient are different and so is the best season for plastic surgery, based on those needs.

In a recent article on the Huffington Post, NYC plastic surgeon and author Dr. Robert Tornambe discusses some of the ways that you can plan your procedure around the seasons.

Winter is a great time for undergoing cosmetic surgeries. You can wear bulkier clothing to conceal scars and swelling, more easily avoid direct sunlight, and combine your recovery period with winter vacations. It’s the season for just about everything: facelifts, rhinoplasties, liposuction, and breast surgeries.

Spring is the lead-up to bikini season and has some of the same advantages of winter. Body contouring and facial surgeries are excellent options during this time of year. If you’re considering breast augmentation or liposuction, be sure that your body has lots of time to recover before you hit the beaches!

Summer is usually the best time for minor procedures, such as Botox and facial fillers. Heat and sun are usually bad for post-operative swelling and can often produce discomfort. Immature or new scars should never be exposed to direct sunlight, since they will stay tanned and be more noticeable. However, some people may still wish to pursue surgeries during this time of year, especially if they have summer vacations. They should be prepared to stay indoors for 1-2 weeks.

Autumn is the time to consider your appearance for the holidays. Surgeries targeting the face, nose, breasts, and body can improve your look in time for winter festivities and New Year’s parties.

For details about the best season for plastic surgery in Eugene, please email Dr. Daniel about specials on treatments like Botox.
