Male Breast Reduction - Gynecomastia

For men who have developed excess breast tissue, Dr. Daniel performs male breast reduction surgery here in Eugene. This surgery is intended to correct a condition known as gynecomastia, which can affect men of all ages.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition identified by an abundance of breast (or chest) tissue. Physicians believe it is caused by a hormone imbalance. Gynecomastia can affect young males as well as older men.

For males who are affected, gynecomastia can be quite bothersome. A significant number of patients choose to ignore (sometimes for years) and some have reportedly gained weight to make the condition less noticeable. Fortunately, male breast reduction surgery can usually alleviate the problem and restore a more masculine appearance to the chest.

Is Male Breast Reduction Right for You?

Goals of male breast reduction include:

  • Correction of gynecomastia
  • Enhanced delineation of pectoral muscles
  • Reduced excess fat on the chest
  • Improved self-confidence

How Male Breast Reduction Works

Male breast reduction can be performed with local anesthetic with sedation, or a general anesthetic. Dr. Daniel will make one of two incisions. An incision will be made in your underarm or around the nipple areola. Through the chosen incision, Dr. Daniel will be able to access the breast tissue.

Dr. Daniel will liposuction out excess fat from the chest area, improving the contours of the chest. If glandular tissue is present, he will then use a scalpel to remove it. The doctor will then close the incisions with sutures and apply a surgical dressing to cover them. A compression garment will also likely be placed around your chest to maintain the new slimmer contours.

After Surgery: What to Expect

When you leave our practice, you will need to make sure you have transportation home as well as help around the house for a few days. You will need to limit your activity, but Dr. Daniel will let you know when you can get back to your normal routine. Any post-operative discomfort will be managed by prescription medication.

You will need to continue to wear the compression garments for several weeks, but after this time, you will begin to see the benefits of your male breast reduction surgery. While it can take a few weeks for the swelling to completely dissipate, you will soon be able to appreciate a more masculine chest. As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle, the results should be long-lasting.
